What Is KanJam?

KanJam is an outdoor flying-disc target game where two-person teams throw and deflect a disc toward standing plastic cylinders. It delivers high-energy, fast-paced lawn competition that keeps players diving for deflections at tailgates, beach days, and backyard cookouts.

Quick Stats

  • Players: 4 players (2 teams of 2)
  • Ages: 10 to Adult
  • Round Time: 15 to 25 minutes
  • Setup Time: 2 minutes
  • Space Needed: Flat outdoor area at least 60 feet long by 15 feet wide
  • Mess Factor: Low
  • Vibe: Competitive, high-energy yard toss

How to Set Up

  • Measure field distance: Place the two KanJam cans exactly 50 feet apart from front edge to front edge (about 17 long adult strides).
  • Align target slots: Face both goals so the front rectangular "Instant Win" slots point directly at one another.
  • Position teammates: Assign one player from each team to stand behind each goal. Teammates face each other across the 50-foot lawn, pairing up beside an opponent.

The 30-Second Host Script

💡 Host Takeaway & Quick Tip"Welcome to KanJam! We play in pairs to exactly 21 points. You throw from behind your goal toward your partner, who slaps or redirects the flying disc into the can. No double-hitting, carrying, or catching the disc as a deflector. A deflected hit earns 1 point, a direct strike earns 2, a deflected slam into the top is 3, and a direct shot through the front slot is an instant walk-off win. If you pass 21, you bust back down to 17. Let's toss!"

How to Play: Step-by-Step Rules

  1. Throw behind the foul line. Stand completely behind the front edge of your goal during your release, without crossing the imaginary goal line.
  2. Redirect with a single touch. Deflectors may slap, bump, or redirect the disc using one or two hands, but cannot catch, carry, or strike the disc more than once.
  3. Tally your points per toss. Score 1 point for a partner-assisted hit on the outside of the can (Dinger), 2 points for an unassisted direct hit on the goal exterior (Deuce), and 3 points for a deflected shot inside the top cylinder opening (Bucket).
  4. Hunt the Instant Win. Throw the disc unassisted directly through the front mail slot or unassisted into the top opening (Chucker) to end the match on the spot.
  5. Apply the bust rule. Teams must finish on exactly 21 points. If a throw pushes your score past 21, deduct those scored points from your current total and reset your score to 17.
  6. Allow redemption throws. The team throwing second retains "the hammer." If Team A reaches 21 first, Team B gets one final throw to match the score or hit an Instant Win.

How to Win and Break a Tie

The first team to reach exactly 21 points or sink an unassisted Instant Win claims victory. If both teams tie at 21 points after the redemption round, head into sudden-death overtime: each player throws one disc, and the team with the higher point total after that single round wins.

Variations for Every Group

  • Kids Version (Short Court): Shorten the court distance to 30 feet, and permit young deflectors two soft taps to redirect the disc into the can.
  • Adults Backyard Edition (One-Hand Rule): Players must hold a cold drink in their non-throwing or non-deflecting hand; dropping or spilling a drink concedes 2 points to the opposing team.
  • Large-Group Bracket (15+ Players): Run single-elimination mini-games to 11 points instead of 21, capping rounds at 7 minutes each so teams cycle through fast.
  • Budget DIY Swap: Place two clean 30-gallon recycling bins 40 feet apart and use a standard 175-gram Ultimate frisbee under the same deflection rules.

Host Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Supply Warning: Keep a microfiber towel nearby; wet grass dew makes plastic discs slippery and drastically ruins throwing accuracy.
  • Common Pitfall (The Illegal Catch): Deflectors often grab or double-hit the disc out of reflex. Enforce clean slap deflections immediately during round one to stop arguments early.
  • Safety Note: Keep non-playing spectators, pets, and lawn chairs at least 10 feet back from the sidelines to prevent collisions with diving deflectors.
  • Host Pro-Tip: Weigh down lightweight plastic cans with two scoops of dirt, sand, or a smooth patio brick inside the bottom so wind cannot blow them over.

KanJam Rules: Official Setup, Scoring, and Fast Play FAQ

Can you play KanJam with more than four players?

Official KanJam uses four players split into two teams of two. For larger parties with 15 or more people, organize a single-elimination tournament bracket where pairs play quick games to 11 points instead of 21. Capping each match at seven minutes keeps waiting teams rotating through quickly.

What can I use if I do not have official KanJam cans?

You can make a budget DIY KanJam set using two clean 30-gallon recycling bins placed 40 feet apart. Pair them with a standard 175-gram Ultimate frisbee and use the exact same deflection scoring rules.

What happens if your score goes over 21 in KanJam?

If a throw pushes your KanJam score past 21 points, your team busts. You must deduct the points you just earned on that toss and reset your team total back down to 17 points. Teams must land on exactly 21 points to win.

How long does a game of KanJam take?

A standard KanJam match takes 15 to 25 minutes to complete. Setting up the two goals takes only two minutes on any flat outdoor lawn that is at least 60 feet long by 15 feet wide.

What age is KanJam good for, and can younger kids play?

KanJam is designed for players ages 10 and up. To include younger kids, shorten the distance between the goals from the official 50 feet down to 30 feet, and allow young deflectors two soft touches to direct the disc into the can.
