Bite the Bag: The Ultimate Flexibility Face-Off
Test balance and flexibility in Bite the Bag! Grab a shrinking paper bag with only your teeth—no hands or knees allowed on the floor.
Supplies Needed
- •Standard brown paper grocery bag (1-2 bags)
- •Pair of sharp kitchen scissors (for trimming between rounds)
How to Play
1. The Hook
Equal parts gymnastics audition and viral physical comedy, Bite the Bag forces players to bend, contort, and crane downward to retrieve a free-standing paper bag off the ground using only their teeth. Just when you think someone has nailed the technique, an inch gets snipped off the top, bringing the entire room to its feet.
2. Quick Stats
- Mess Factor: Zero (just trimmed strips of paper).
- Space Needed: Medium open floor space (at least an 8x8-foot circle free of furniture).
- Setup Time: Under 60 seconds.
- Vibe: High-energy, roaring spectator excitement, and side-splitting contortions.
3. Setup
- Clear a wide radius in the center of the room to give contestants room to sway and tumble safely without hitting table corners.
- Open a standard brown paper grocery sack so it stands completely upright and flat on the floor in the center of the ring.
- Have your scissors ready nearby, and gather all contenders around the perimeter in a spectator circle.
4. The 30-Second Host Explanation
"Listen up, crew! The objective is dead simple, but physics is not on your side. When it is your turn, step up to the bag and lift it off the floor using nothing except your teeth. Here is the golden rule: the only things allowed to make contact with the floor are your two feet. If a hand, knee, elbow, or hip brushes the ground, you are out. Everyone who grabs the bag cleanly advances, and after every completed round, I snip off two inches of the bag. Last player standing wins!"
5. Step-by-Step Rules
- Step to the Line: Players take turns one at a time approaching the upright bag in the center.
- The Chomp: The active player hinges, squats, or balances on one leg to bite the edge of the bag. The only body parts permitted to touch the floor at any point are the soles of their feet (or a single foot if attempting a flamingo balance).
- Clean Lift: The contestant must lift the bag completely clear of the floor using only their mouth and return to an upright standing posture without stumbling to their knees or bracing with their hands.
- Pass or Elimination: A successful lift qualifies the player for the next round. If any non-foot body part touches the floor, or if they drop the bag before standing tall, they are eliminated.
- The Cut Down: Once every player in the rotation has attempted the round, the host trims roughly 1 to 2 inches off the top edge of the bag with scissors and resets it upright.
- Progressive Descent: Repeat rounds with progressively shorter bag heights—from grocery sack height down to a razor-thin 1-inch cardboard base.
6. Winning & Sudden-Death Tiebreaker
How to Win: The last contestant capable of cleanly lifting the paper bag off the floor without committing a fault is crowned the champion.
Sudden-Death Tiebreaker: If two or more finalists successfully bite the bag when it is trimmed flush to a mere single-inch rim, institute the "One-Foot Flamingo Rule": both players must complete the pick-up standing exclusively on their non-dominant foot without letting their airborne foot touch the floor at any point.
7. Pro-Host Advice & "Why It Fails"
- Supply Warning: Avoid bags with heavy fold creases or flimsy takeout sacks that collapse under their own weight. A crisp, flat-bottom grocery bag stands upright reliably even when cut down to tiny stub levels.
- Common Pitfall: Knee grazes and sneaky finger taps! Contestants often instinctively post a hand on the floor to stabilize a deep squat. Appoint an official floor referee to watch ground contact at eye level so calls are undisputed.
- Host Pro-Tip: Play on a carpeted area, area rug, or gym mat. Slippery hardwood in socks causes feet to kick out, while a textured rug gives players the grip and safety cushion they need when going for gold.
