How to Play

1. The Hook

A mischievous leprechaun raided the bank and stashed his hoard across your party space. Players get two minutes of frantic, elbow-to-elbow treasure hunting to stash the biggest bounty in their cauldron before the leprechaun cuts them off.

2. Quick Stats

  • Mess Factor: Zero
  • Space Needed: Living room, basement, classroom, or backyard
  • Setup Time: 5–10 minutes
  • Vibe: High-octane, festive scavenger race

3. Setup

  • Stash the Hoard: While players wait in another room with doors shut, scatter 50–100 gold coins at various elevations (under couch cushions, tucked into bookshelves, behind picture frames, atop plant pots).
  • Hide the Lucky Token: Plant the single marked 'Lucky Shamrock' coin in a notoriously tricky spot.
  • Equipment Check: Hand each player an empty collection cauldron or cup at the starting boundary line.

4. The 30-Second Host Explanation

"Listen up, gold hunters! A leprechaun dropped his treasure all over the room. When the music hits, you have exactly two minutes to hunt down as many coins as you can carry. Standard gold coins score one point each. The player who tracks down the rare marked Shamrock Coin scores five bonus points. Hands must deposit coins directly into your own cauldron—no stealing from other pots! Most points when the buzzer sounds takes the pot of gold. Ready, set, hunt!"

5. Step-by-Step Rules

  1. The Lockdown: All players line up behind the boundary line. No early peeking or crossing the threshold before the countdown ends.
  2. The Gold Rush: The host starts a two-minute upbeat Irish party track. Players scatter to search high and low, depositing found coins into their cauldrons.
  3. Cauldron Etiquette: Players must hold their own cauldrons at all times. Setting cauldrons down unattended invites defensive guarding, which is strictly prohibited. Swiping coins from another player's bucket results in immediate disqualification.
  4. Buzzer Drop: As soon as the music cuts or the timer sounds, players must freeze and raise both hands in the air. Any coins picked up after the buzzer do not count.
  5. The Tally: Players return to the staging table to count their loot: standard gold coins = 1 point; marked Shamrock Coin = 5 points.

6. Winning & Sudden-Death Tiebreaker

How to Win: The player with the highest total point value wins the round and keeps the leprechaun's bounty (or trades their loot for the grand prize).

Sudden-Death Tiebreaker: Place a mini cauldron on the floor 8 feet away from the tied players. Give each contender 3 gold coins. Players take turns flicking or tossing coins into the cauldron. First player to sink more coins in a single round wins the tiebreaker.

7. Pro-Host Advice & "Why It Fails"

  • Supply Warning: If using chocolate foil coins on a warm day or outdoors, body heat will turn them into mush inside sweaty hands. Stick to durable plastic coins for the hunt and award chocolate coins as the post-game edible prize.
  • Common Pitfall: Kids trampling each other or breaking household items. Establish clear 'off-limits' zones before starting (e.g., inside kitchen appliances, above eye-level shelving, or fragile display cabinets).
  • Host Pro-Tip: Keep a master count of how many coins you hid before the round starts. If you hide 60 coins and players only recover 54, you can run a 60-second 'Leprechaun Cleanup' bonus round to recover the missing pieces before they end up inside your vacuum cleaner!
