Suck It Up: The M&M Straw Challenge
Race against the clock in this hilarious Minute to Win It classic! Use straw suction to transfer M&Ms across plates without hands. Fast, chaotic party fun.
Supplies Needed
- •1 standard drinking straw per player (standard bore, non-flexible plastic or sturdy paper)
- •25-30 plain M&Ms or Skittles per player
- •2 paper plates or shallow bowls per player
- •60-second digital timer or stopwatch
How to Play
1. The Hook
A breathless, high-stakes lung capacity showdown where players frantically vacuum-lift candy shells using nothing but a straw and sheer determination. One nervous laugh or misplaced exhale, and your candy goes careening across the table!
2. Quick Stats
- Mess Factor: Low (dry candy, easily contained)
- Space Needed: Dining table, counter, or folding table
- Setup Time: 2 minutes
- Vibe: High-speed, chaotic, and laugh-out-loud funny
3. Setup
- Place two paper plates side-by-side in front of each player station along a sturdy table.
- Count out exactly 25 plain M&Ms onto the left plate (the Starting Plate), leaving the right plate (the Target Plate) completely empty.
- Provide each competitor with one clean, dry, standard drinking straw.
4. The 30-Second Host Explanation
"Contestants, straws in mouth and hands strictly behind your back! When the clock starts, you have 60 seconds to vacuum-lift M&Ms one by one using pure straw suction and deposit them onto your target plate. No hands, no chewing, and no touching the plate. If a candy drops off-target, you must retrieve it with suction alone—no scooping! Whoever transfers the most M&Ms before the buzzer sounds wins. In 3, 2, 1... Suck it up!"
5. Step-by-Step Rules
- Hands Behind Back: Contestants lean over the table with hands clasped behind their back (or holding the straw steady with one hand if playing the casual/kids version).
- Lock the Seal: Inhale sharply through the straw directly against the flat surface of a single M&M to lock it onto the straw tip via suction.
- Airborne Transport: Maintain continuous inhalation while carefully hovering the straw over toward the Target Plate.
- Release and Reset: Break suction above the target plate by pausing your breath, allowing the candy to drop. Instantly dive back for the next one.
- Fumble Recovery: If an M&M drops onto the table between plates, players must re-vacuum it from where it landed—no manual assistance permitted.
6. Winning & Sudden-Death Tiebreaker
How to Win: The first player to clear all 25 M&Ms onto their target plate—or the player with the highest verified candy count when the 60-second timer expires—claims victory.
Sudden-Death Tiebreaker: "First to Three." Tied players reset with three M&Ms on their starting plate. On "Go!", the first player to successfully transfer all three candies into the target plate wins the showdown.
7. Pro-Host Advice & "Why It Fails"
- Supply Warning: Never use oversized boba/smoothie straws. Wide straws pose a choking hazard because small candies can get sucked directly inside the tube, while narrow cocktail stirrers lack the suction surface to lift the candy. Stick strictly to classic 0.25-inch beverage straws.
- Common Pitfall: Saliva build-up. Nervous contestants often accidentally exhale moisture into the straw, making the tip slick and dissolving the candy shell's friction. Keep a stash of fresh, dry backup straws on hand to swap between heats.
- Host Pro-Tip: To level up the game for older teens or adults, space the starting and target plates 2 to 3 feet apart. Forcing players to balance suction while shuffling sideways turns a simple tabletop game into pure physical comedy.
