How to Play

1. The Hook

The undisputed king of holiday party chaos, White Elephant (also known as Dirty Santa or Yankee Swap) transforms gift-giving into a high-stakes psychological game of strategy, laughter, and playful betrayal. Will you play it safe with an unrevealed mystery box, or ruthlessly snatch the room's most coveted treasure right out of your coworker's hands?

2. Quick Stats

  • Mess Factor: Low (wrapping paper remnants)
  • Space Needed: Living room, lounge, or office conference area with seats arranged in a circle
  • Setup Time: 5 minutes
  • Vibe: High-energy, hilariously competitive, and endlessly social

3. Setup

  • Place all wrapped, unlabeled gifts in an accessible central pile on a table or floor where every seated guest has an unobstructed view.
  • Seat guests in a wide circle or horseshoe facing the gift pile.
  • Write numbers 1 through the total headcount on small paper slips, fold them, place them in a hat, and have each player draw their turn number.

4. The 30-Second Host Explanation

"Welcome to White Elephant! Number 1 kicks things off by choosing and unwrapping any present from the center. Every player after that faces a choice: unwrap a brand-new mystery gift, OR steal any already-opened gift from someone else. If your gift gets stolen, you immediately get to steal from someone else or open a new one. A single item can only be stolen three times before it is permanently frozen. No immediate take-backs, and because Player 1 goes first without any steal options, they get one final revenge swap at the very end of the game!"

5. Step-by-Step Rules

  1. Draw Your Order: Every player draws a number from the hat. Player 1 begins, followed in ascending numerical order.
  2. The First Reveal: Player 1 selects a wrapped gift from the central stash, unwraps it completely, and holds it up so the entire room can admire (or roast) it.
  3. Unwrap or Steal: On each subsequent turn, the active player chooses one of two moves: unwrap an unopened present from the stash, OR steal an opened, eligible gift from another player.
  4. The Steal Cascade: If your gift is stolen, you immediately take a turn. You may either steal any other eligible opened gift or unwrap a fresh one from the pile. A turn round only officially concludes when an unopened present is unwrapped.
  5. Anti-Loop Restrictions: You cannot immediately steal back the exact gift that was just taken from you in the same turn cycle. Furthermore, once any individual gift has been stolen three times, it is declared Frozen and locked to its final owner for the rest of the game.
  6. Player 1's Grand Finale: After the highest number draws and opens or steals, Player 1 receives the ultimate privilege: they may swap their current gift with ANY unfrozen gift in the room. If Player 1 chooses to swap, the displaced player may make one final steal or accept the trade, concluding the game.

6. Winning & Sudden-Death Tiebreaker

How to Win: Victory in White Elephant is completely subjective—you win if you walk out the door holding the room's most desirable gadget, viral gag gift, or coveted bottle of cheer.

Sudden-Death Tiebreaker: If two players attempt to claim or steal the same gift at the same moment during a cascade, turn priority automatically belongs to the player who originally drew the lower starting number.

7. Pro-Host Advice & "Why It Fails"

  • Supply Warning: Always keep a wrapped, neutral $20 gift hidden in your closet. Someone will always forget their gift, bring something broken, or bring a plus-one without warning.
  • Common Pitfall: The Infinite Steal Trap: Without the strict "Three-Steal Freeze" rule, large groups will cycle the same viral item for two hours until people get genuinely frustrated. Track steals visibly on a dry-erase board or with sticky notes placed on the gifts.
  • Host Pro-Tip: Clarify the Theme Early: Send explicit invite guidance setting both the dollar cap (e.g., "Firm $20 limit") and the tone (e.g., "Hilarious gag gifts," "Actually useful goods," or "Food and drink only"). Mismatched expectations ruin exchanges faster than bad luck.
